Flash Tutorial: Line Art by nasakii Flash Tutorial: Line Art by nasakii
[edit] The "Cut" shortcut on step 15 should be Ctrl+X.[/edit]

This is something I've been meaning to do for the past almost 3 years. So here it is, a line art tutorial.

I should throw up the coloring/shading tutorial later this week.

If you want, you can watch the actual image being drawn in video form via YouTube: [link]
Y'know... If your into that stuff.

Flash Tutorial: Line Art by =nasakii is a technique on making vector line art in Flash CS5, which is a great thing to highlight for Vector Resource Friday. Learn how useful the line tool is, especially if converted to fill, and then bent to give weight. ( Featured by FantasyStock )

How come every time I do this, some lines of the lineart dissapear after converting to fills?

if you have too many intersecting or complex lines selected, converting to fill might get a little screwy. Selecting fewer lines at a time to convert is the only way around that I know of.

I've been trying to learn about flash, but I have no idea where to start! This tutorial was super helpful, I didn't realize how useful the line tool could be.

Cool tutorial. Showed off some stuff I'd never thought of doing. I do wonder, what does "milter" do as opposed to bevel and round?

:iconnasakii:
nasakii Featured By Owner Apr 1, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
milter will give a sharp corner, round gives a rounded corner, and bevel gives a flat corner.

this has been very helpful, I wish I'd know this in flash class. I would scan and import my work in and then it would do strange things. this is so much better to work with. :granny: learns a new trick! I use Anime studio and I'm going to try the same thing with it. great help, :bounce:

converting line to fill also helps alot in animation if you are doing scaling.

if you do a motion tween scale down of a symbol drawn blown up in thick line tool, the lineart will not scale down in size and will make the drawing in the symbol looks like it has thick outlines

converting them to fills will allow them to scale properly

ok so ive been in a slump the past few months now. ive been attempting to ink scaned in work in photoshop with a tablet. i just cant get over the learning curve of it i guess, ive also used illustrator but to me it takes a ton of time trying to ink lines (i may not be doing things right...) but then i ran across some stellar art done in flash i was baffled at first i didnt know such art could be done i thought it was all animation. so after that i looked up tuts. and found yours and might i say what a help they have been!! i attempted ink in flash for the first time and i was pleasantly surprised how fast i got a hang of it then flash crashed.... i plan on finishing it tomorrow thank you so much for these tuts. your amazing by the way you totally jumped to my top 5 fav artist. :) keep it up!

I'm glad you found your way to flash! And sorry that it crashed on you :S Gotta remember to save often. Never know what'll happen =P

Oh, if you're scanning inked work, try the "Modify>Bitmap>Trace Bitmap..." function in Flash. You might get a cool, smoothed, inked effect. Though results may vary. And I know that tutorial I wrote really talks up the line tool, but give that brush tool a chance too. ;)

I prefer really thick lines, myself. Though I've always been meaning to try out hairline-width lineart.

The next step is no lines at all after that. There have been some pretty amazing looking art that only comprises of colors... It's like coloring the image and getting rid of the lineart. lol

It's in the properties panel in the "color" drop down menu. The symbol needs to be selected before the option will appear. When it's selected you'll see a blue box around the symbol.

Choose alpha, then slide that slider. I work in both Flash 6 (MX)and Flash CS5. The option for alpha is the same in these two versions, so it should be the same in 8.

Lemme know if you need any more help. I don't mind.

GOOD LUCK! BAAWWWWWW

I love this tutorial! Its the first one i found that actually shows how to taper the lines. Which is my problem - I can't manage to select only a portion of the line and delete that. (even after the convertion to fills) It always just selects the whole thing. What am I doing wrong? D:
